Green Horn vs Green Riau: Comparing These Two Green Varieties

Today, we’ll be lining up two middle-popularity green varieties in our side-by-side comparison, Green Horn and Riau. Many fans of green kratom varieties wonder how these two stand apart, with Green Horn being more well-known and Riau less well-known.

Both being green-veined strains, they might share some commonalities. However, their subtle differences in potential effects and alkaloid profiles may differ slightly. Read on to understand the basics of each strain and what makes them different from one another so that you can make the most informed green-variety choice if looking to add either into your regimen,

What is Green Horn Kratom?

Green Horn is largely grown and commercially cultivated on farms in Indonesia, however it can also be found growing in the wild. The “Horn” in its name is a representation of its visually spike-shaped leaves that differ from a majority of other kratom strains with smooth edges. Horn kratom is thought to possibly be one of the strains used to breed Maeng Da (which used botanical grafting of two strains to create a new one), although this has not been confirmed or documented.

Horn kratom comes in 3 vein color varieties which are determined by when the leaves of the Horn kratom plant are harvested. Green-veined leaves are harvested in between Red and White Horn varieties, which each have subtle tints in their veins and stem colors. While the leaves are immature, they have white veins and stems and while they are super mature, they have red veins and stems. Green Horn is right in the middle, with green throughout. The vein and stem colors might be representative of slightly differing alkaloid profiles, of which there are believed to be 35 in the Horn kratom plant.

Green Horn is believed to contain diverse alkaloids, with the active primary ones being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (present in all Mitragyna Speciosa strains). In addition to mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine a number of other alkaloids may exist, such as speciogynine, corynantheidine and paynantheine that might help collaborate in the totality of effects (although not much is known about many of them).

Green Horn is celebrated for its potentially balanced properties, providing energy and relaxation due to it being in the middle of the road between White and Red Horn varieties. Users often report increased focus, productivity and mental sharpness, along with a strong aroma. Its mid-to-high alkaloid ratios make Green Horn potentially suitable for daytime uses, delivering a possible gentle lift without excessive stimulation or drowsiness seen in the other Horn color varieties.

What is Green Riau Kratom?

The Green Riau strain gets its name from the Riau region in Indonesia, where the strain was first believed to be discovered. The Riau region is located on the East Coast if the Sumatra Island and is known for its lush and vibrant climate, friendly to kratom tree growth and development.

Similarly to the Horn color varieties, Riau has three vein colors as well, with Green Riau leaves harvested in the middle of the growth cycle. It is believed that the potential effects of green vein, red vein and white vein Horn varieties differ from one another and also in terms of total alkaloid profile and development. In all three color varieties of Riau, the two main alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitraynine exist, but possibly in differing ratios depending on the variety.

Over 2 dozen other alkaloids are believed to exist in Green Riau, however the mechanisms of each one in terms of their standalone contribution to the potential effects and interactions are not well understood. Some of the secondary alkaloids to mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitraynine might be paynantheine, speciociliatine and isopaynantheine.

As a green vein, Green Riau may share a nice balance between its Red and White cousins, leading to potential relaxation and energetic effects. Samplers of the Green variety often suggest that Green Riau offers stimulation with a blend of calming focus that is not as sedating as the Red variety of Riau. Therefore, Green Riau may be a great choice for morning, daytime and possibly evenings.

Due to the risks of adverse effects linked to kratom, the Food and Drug Administration posted a public memo warning people not to consume kratom. This should be considered prior and discussed with your doctor, outlining all of the above risk factors. In addition to this, kratom strains like Green Horn and Riau may be habit-forming due to the primary (and possibly secondary alkaloids). Therefore, avoiding daily use and high dosages is highly advised, otherwise one might have difficulty stopping use and some unpleasant adverse effects upon doing do
